I write haiku about cicadas, 蝉 (Semi), as the last summer topic in 2010.
Cicadas
singing at night too
neon lights
ネオン灯夜鳴くセミも現れり
Neon tou yoru naku semi mo arawareri
Midnight dews
washing their mouths
cicadas
真夜中の露洗うかなセミの口
Mayonaka no tsuyu arau kana semi no kuchi

返信削除Interesting pieces about cicadas... I hear them in my mind always
返信削除Hi Hidenori, isn't it a higurashi semi? We don't have in Croatia cicadas singing after evening, but we have the kathydids, e.g. Tettigonia viridissima, the green locust etc. So, this cricket is our "daydarkner" not a cicada. They are singing only during the sun light. I like your cicada haiku!
返信削除Hi Tomislav, thank you for a nice comment.
返信削除According to the NEBLINE Newsletter on August 2001, cicadas have changed in their life styles because of the changes in their natural environments.
In the topic, 'Cicadas: Mid-Summer Night's Screamers, a reproter said as follows:
Many of us who have grown up in the Midwest are used to the sound of cicadas; we might even look forward to it because it signals the changing season the dog-days of summer.
For some of us, it is hard to believe that this noise can be annoying to anyone.
By the way, here in Akita, Japan, cicada's voice is not annoying, but cicadas as well as other insects have changed in their life styles partly because of some changes in the natural surroundings. As a result, in case of haiku, the ways in their expressions might be different from the ones used before.
Besides, some season words in Japanese haiku might have been lost, and some new season words might be born.
Anyway I would like to observe and see the happenings around us in our daily lives and take them up in haiku from some new view points. I hope that we will share new haiku written under the new conditions.
Thank you again for your remarks.

返信削除I especially like the first ku.
A good use of the sense-switching technique.
The contrast and wordplay are impressive.
Nicely done!
I enjoyed the read. Thanks for sharing.
